Bedford Free Methodist Church
"Empowered through Christ, we will Serve, Save, Strengthen and Send"

History

Our church was organized October 16, 1914, with 28 charter members. A new wood frame building was erected on the same property as it is now located. The first service in the new church structure was held the first Sunday after the Fourth of July, 1915.

To accommodate the growth, in 1926 the building was enlarged, remodeled, and stone veneer added. Rev. O.L. Mumaw was pastor at that time.

On January 23, 1951, the church building was destroyed by fire. During the process of rebuilding, the services were held at Stalker School and during the summer months in a large tent at Eight and S Streets and then back to Stalker School in the fall.

Although the work on the new church was not completed, the first service was held the Sunday following Thanksgiving, 1951. The new church building was dedicated on February 17, 1952, with Rev. Elmer Riggs serving at this time.

In 1966, with Rev. Charles Chestnut as pastor, the educational wing was added. In 1974 another remodeling and enlarging project began with the addition of a new youth educational building.

On Friday, September 14, 2007, fire broke out on the roof in a shed where two air conditioning units are kept and the sanctuary received significant heat damage. Smoke damage was sustained throughout the entire building. After several months of a step by step process, the building is now being restored.  The office and Youth Building were not affected by the fire.

Attendance continues to grow as people are brought to Christ, taught to walk as Jesus, and released in ministry.
